Neurontin description
Neurontin is a prescription medication that helps control partial seizures in patients with epilepsy. Neurontin also treats pain caused by postherpetic neuralgia or PHN. PHN is a pain that lasts after shingles has healed.

How to take Neurontin
Doses may vary. The number of capsules that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. For epilepsy, the normal recommended dose for most patients age 12 and up is one 300 mg capsule three times a day. Your doctor may increase your dose gradually as needed. However, the dose should not exceed 3600 mg a day. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is less than 2 hours until your next dose, take the missed dose right away and take the next dose 1 to 2 hours later. When taking 3 capsules a day, do not allow more than 12 hours to pass between doses.
Neurontin precautions
Neurontin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Also, avoid alcohol during treatment. Alcohol may increase side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. Antacids will decrease the amount of Neurontin that's absorbed in the stomach. Do not take Neurontin at least 2 hours after a dose of antacid. Neurontin may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness including antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives, pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants.
Side effects of Neurontin
Less serious side effects that may be more likely to occur during treatment include dizziness, poor coordination, drowsiness, blurred or double vision, irregular back-and-forth movements of the eyes, nausea, vomiting, and tremor. These side effects are mild and are not serious enough for you to stop treatment. If you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives) stop taking Neurontin and seek medical attention immediately. If children 3 to 12 years of age experience any change in mood or behavior while taking this medicine, stop treatment and contact your doctor immediately.
